A dust collection system produces nothing. It shortens no cycle and adds no value to the part.
That is why the classic payback calculation does not work. What you calculate is what it prevents.
What it prevents
Shutdown. Without compliant dust capture, operations can be suspended. This is the cost nobody budgets and the one that dwarfs the rest.
Operator illness. Respirable dust causes irreversible occupational disease. The cost is paid in compensation, in absence, and in people lost.
Wear on everything else. Airborne abrasive dust gets into bearings, guideways and electrical cabinets across the hall. It shortens the life of everything around it.
Cleaning. Dust that is not captured settles and has to be swept. That is labour, every shift.
Abrasive loss. In a poorly balanced system, extraction pulls good abrasive along with the dust. This is a direct, measurable cost and the easiest one to ignore.
Surface quality. Dust settling back on clean parts compromises the next operation, painting in particular.
What gets sized
Filtration is not bought “by power”. It is sized on the air volume required to maintain correct velocities at the enclosure openings.
That volume follows from the geometry: opening area, enclosure type and required inward velocity. A machine with large openings needs high volume, no matter how small the part.
Undersizing does not show at commissioning. It shows in the dust escaping around the doors and in filters clogging too soon.
Running cost
Filters — cartridges or bags, with replacement intervals that depend on actual loading.
Fan energy — running whenever blasting runs.
Compressed air for filter cleaning, on self-cleaning systems.
Disposal of the collected dust, as waste.
The question to ask when quoting
Not “what does the filter cost”, but: what air volume do I need for my installation, and what velocities does that give at the openings?
A supplier who answers the second question has understood the problem. One who answers only the first is selling a machine, not a solution.
