Silica dust and silicosis: why sand is no longer used for blasting

Sand blasting disappeared from serious industry for a single reason. Not because sand is ineffective. Because the person blasting with it gets sick.

What happens

Sand contains crystalline silica. On impact with the part, the grain shatters and releases fine, respirable particles.

Respirable particles are the ones small enough to pass the upper airways and reach the lungs. Once there, they do not leave.

The result is silicosis — an irreversible pulmonary fibrosis. The lung scars progressively, and breathing capacity drops. There is no treatment that reverses the process.

The disease develops slowly, over years, which is the most treacherous part: the operator feels nothing during the period when protection would still help.

How widespread the exposure is

The standard reference manual in the field estimates that over 100,000 blasting operators are exposed to silica dust, adding up to tens of millions of exposure hours per year.

The figures are American and a few decades old. The order of magnitude of the problem has not changed.

The dust does not stop at the operator

Dust is carried by air. High concentrations affect people who are not blasting but work nearby.

Which is why the problem is not solved by putting a mask on one person.

What replaces it

Modern abrasives do not contain free crystalline silica in a dangerous form. Steel shot and grit in particular recirculate in a closed system and do not produce respirable dust in the same way.

That does not mean the dust disappears. Dust also comes from the part — rust, mill scale, old paint, foundry sand. Which is why the filtration system stays necessary whatever the abrasive.

What is left to do

Three things, in order of effectiveness:

  1. Eliminate the dangerous abrasive. The best measure is the one that takes the risk out of the process.
  2. Enclose and extract. The enclosure plus ventilation take the dust out of the breathing zone.
  3. Protect the operator. Personal equipment is the last line, not the first.

The order matters. A good mask in a dusty workshop treats the symptom.
