There are two ways to throw abrasive at a part. With a centrifugal wheel, or with compressed air through a nozzle.
They do the same thing. Not at the same rate, and not for the same parts.
The throughput difference
A wheel propels the abrasive mechanically. The blades throw it, and the energy comes straight from the electric motor.
Order of magnitude: a medium-power wheel sends the shot out at roughly 75–85 m/s and moves tens of thousands of kilograms of abrasive per hour.
A compressed air nozzle of usual diameter moves a flow around twenty times smaller.
The practical conclusion: one wheel replaces about 20 nozzles. That is why automated production lines use wheels, not nozzles.
When you choose the wheel
- High volume, repetitive parts
- Robust parts that take the impact
- Lowest possible cost per part
- No need to reach hidden areas with a directed jet
The wheel is a productivity machine. It consumes electricity, not compressed air — and compressed air is expensive.
When you choose the nozzle
- One-off parts or small batches
- Complicated geometries where the jet has to be aimed by hand
- Fragile or thin parts, where control matters more than speed
- Internal areas, corners, weld joints
- Site work, outside the plant
How the decision is made
The question is not “which is better”. It is “what parts do I have, and in what quantity”.
Many plants run both: a wheel machine for the main flow, and a nozzle cabinet for touch-ups, special parts and repairs.
